How to Plan a Wedding in Kampala: The Complete Guide

From venue to vendors — everything you need to know

Start With Your Budget

Before you book anything, set a realistic budget. A standard wedding in Kampala for 200–300 guests typically ranges from UGX 160M to UGX 360M depending on your chosen tier of service and vendors.

The single biggest mistake couples make is underestimating costs. Add a 10–15% contingency buffer before you commit to any vendor.

Choose Your Date Early

Popular venues in Kampala book out 12–18 months in advance — especially for December and January weekends. If you have a date in mind, lock the venue first. Everything else follows.

Avoid booking during school holidays if most guests have children. Check the Uganda school calendar before finalising.

The Three Events to Plan

Most Ugandan weddings involve three distinct events:

  1. Introduction ceremony (kwanjula) — typically 3–6 months before the white wedding
  2. White wedding — the church or civil ceremony
  3. Reception — the celebration that follows

Each requires separate venue, catering, and decor planning. Many couples work with a single coordinator across all three events, which significantly reduces stress.

Build Your Vendor List

The vendors that get booked first (and whose quality matters most):

  • Photographer and videographer — book 9+ months in advance for top talent
  • Venue — the single most constraining choice
  • Catering — arrange tastings before signing
  • MC — experienced MCs get booked early; they set the tone of your reception

Work With a Professional Coordinator

An experienced event coordinator does more than logistics — they protect you from costly mistakes, know which vendors to avoid, and ensure the day runs without you having to manage a single detail.
